Lehighton Insurance AgencyHistory

In 1977, Russ Smale purchased the T.W. Cooper Insurance Agency in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, and, two years later, he acquired the Lee Stover Insurance Agency in nearby Sellersville. That year his son, Andrew, joined him in the insurance business.

In 1985, Russ Smale’s other son, Mike, also joined the business. After Russ Smale retired in 1992, Mike successfully recruited Thomas Wilkinson and Leo Carlin to help grow T.W. Cooper’s commercial insurance business. By 2001, the agencies grew their business from $2 million to more than $15 million in premiums.

A year later, Mike Tom & Leo formed Commonwealth Insurance Group, LTD. The new entity purchased the Durn and Bieler Agency in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. A thriving agency with a deep succesful history.

In 2006, the principals formed T.W. Cooper Insurance LLC, a partnership comprised of Mike, Tom and Leo, which added a new branch agency located in Plumsteadville PA. This agency has been lead by Jane Armstrong since its inception.

T.W. Cooper Insurance, LLC then purchased the Roscoe P. Snyder Agency in Walnutport, Pennsylvania in 2009 and the Scott Fisher Insurance Agency in Lehighton in 2011.

In 1977, the business had only three employees and $2 million in annual premiums. Since then, it has grown to include more than 30 employees managing in excess of $35 million in premiums and representing more than a dozen insurance companies.

T.W. Cooper offers a complete line of commercial auto, property, liability, worker’s compensation, business umbrella and group health, disability and life; personal–auto, homeowner’s, boat, motorcycle, umbrella, whole and term life insurance. In addition to ERIE, T.W. Cooper also represents the Progressive, Hartford, Chubb, AIG, Lehigh Mutual, Brethren Mutual and other companies.

What is an Independent Insurance Agent?

When you decide to buy a car, you wouldn’t purchase the first one you see. What if one day the automobile industry decided to make only one type of car, one make and one model. You wouldn’t have a choice!

The same situation holds true for insurance. You need insurance to drive a car, to purchase a house, to protect your family’s financial future and to run a small business. But if there was only one insurance company that offered only one type of insurance, car insurance, home insurance or business owner policy — you wouldn’t have a choice. The only solution would be going to that one company.

With an independent insurance agent, you have choices. Independent agents are not tied to any one insurance company. One of the advantages of using an independent agent is that he or she works to satisfy your needs. You are using an expert for an important financial decision.

An independent agent has several companies that he or she can approach to get you the best coverage at the best price. And your independent agent will know the companies with the most efficient claims departments to recover your losses as quickly as possible.

When you buy insurance, whether it’s for your home, your car or your business, you want an advocate who will properly assess the risks you face and give you an objective analysis of the marketplace, it’s up to you to make the final choice.
